HOLDING UP THE SKY  (China).

One day an elephant was walking down a path quietly and lazily. He saw a humming bird lying on its back with its feet pointed towards the sky.

“ What on earth are you doing little bird?” Asked the elephant.

‘I heard the sky is going to fall down today,” replied the little bird.

‘And what do you think you are going to do?”

“I am doing my little to hold up the sky.”

“Who do you think you are, you puny little bird.” Ridiculed the elephant. Do you think those tiny feet could help keep up the sky? Don’t be silly, get up and get off my way,” retorted the elephant.

“Well,” said the little bird, “if everybody shrugs off their shoulders like you, then the sky will surely fall; and we will all be dead before you can turn round and say, Jack Robinson.’ That’s not how it should be. Think About what you can do with your big self. Blow your trumpet, rally all your elephant kind, and trumpet together with all your might: perhaps you will frighten the sky away

“ Thank you little one for your suggestion. I should be ashamed of myself for talking meanly to you. Although you are small you have a big brain. I can very well take an example from you. Thank you for your great thoughts and your great suggestion. I shall think about it,” said the elephant and walked away.

“‘Everybody needs to do what they can; and this is what I can,” said the little bird picking up and pushing up with all his courage.

The elephant hid his face in shame and walked away.
